Creating a MINDSTORMS robot is challenging — but not too difficult — with an illustrated step-by-step booklet and software showing the way. The booklet gives you instructions for building a basic “Quick Start” robot only, which is an easy introduction to the MINDSTORMS experience. This robot took our two adult testers about 30 minutes to build and 30 minutes to program. After that, they spent a lot of time just playing with their creation and testing its abilities.

LEGO Mindstorms NXT 2.0 (8547) Reviews:
An average rating of four point five stars, LEGo Mindsorms NXT 2.0 have overall received great feedback.
One thing that needs to be made clear on this LEGO is “this is not your traditional LEGOS” that you simply create and that’s it. Mindstorm LEGOs is a complicated computer programming tool. This toy is for kids who enjoy Robotics, Science, computers, Mechanics, or enjoys creating things with their mind and hands. On the programming part, your kid may not be able to do this on his/her own; you need to do it with him/her. If you do not know how to program, you need to learn this; there are books out there that can be very helpful.
This can be enjoyed by kids and adult alike; and if the child is really interested in these types of play he will find that this is easy to use and the toy has endless possibilities for creativity. Many parents and teachers say that this is a great investment for kids as it allows them to tap into their creativity and imagination in order to create something unique. It awakens a child’s passion, skill and creativity.
You can also do some simple programming without the computer, simply on the brick itself. Majority of the diagrams comprehensible and easy to follow; you may make a couple mistakes but there is margin for error so do not fret because you can redo this and the toy will even work even if there is a missing piece. Again it will freely allow you to harness your creativity and allow you to experiment.
With more experience, you will be able to invent more complex and unique creations. Interact with MINDSTORM community online to share experiences and ideas.
The drag and drop programming is easy to use but tends to freeze if you have loaded a lot of loops and “if-thens” to it; can be unstable per one reviewer. Also the issue of “NXT 2.0 Blank Display” that they say are common to those who have purchased this item.
Some of the more advanced robotics fanatics found this to be less than impressive while those who were less familiar were overwhelmed by its “techiness”.
Two other comments were the lack of rechargeable batteries included and the poorly designed box, which is just what it is, a box with no compartments whatsoever.
